CROSS-COUNTRY MOUNTAIN BIKING

Cross-country mountain biking is a sport that combines stamina and skill, set in a beautiful natural backdrop of mountains, hills and peak districts. Comprised of a series of races from point to point through laid out trails, xc mountain biking is becoming ever more popular and receiving a growing amount of media coverage. It is an Olympic category while major events across the globe are held annually, culminating in the Cross-Country World Cup.

WHO TAKES PART IN THE SPORT?

Cross-country mountain biking is available to any cycling enthusiast with men, women and children of all ages enjoying this opportunity of challenging themselves in stunning mountain surroundings. Trails range from forest firebreak tracks to narrow uphill or downhill single-tracks that test handling skills and endurance. Having the correct cross-country mountain bike helps bikers perform to their best ability, with beginners generally starting on a hardtail single suspension bike.

TECHNICAL XC MTB SPECIFICATIONS

At Bike Craft, we offer a range of cross-country mountain bikes in different sizes from XS to XL. General specifications include suspension forks of between 100mm and 120mm and 29-inch wheels. Having as light a bike as possible is also a consideration. Cross-country mountain bike frames are made of either aluminium or carbon with both having different advantages. On tough trails that involve a lot of uphill work, light weight is a distinct advantage which is where carbon mountain bikes come into their own. They are snappier and respond more briskly, an important factor for novice riders or where mountain trails involve technical downhill stretches.

AN INTRODUCTION TO TRAIL RIDING

Beautiful scenery, fresh air and a sport that challenges and stretches come together with trail riding. This is a sport that takes riders off the flat and into hills, peak districts and mountains. While similar to cross-country cycling in some aspects, trail riding is more aggressive, requiring the tackling of challenging single tracks. Modern trail centres offer a mix of technical and free stretches providing something for all ability levels.

WHO CAN TAKE PART IN TRAIL RIDING

Trail riding is the perfect sport for adding an extra dimension to cycling with courses and trails designed for all levels of experience. Trail riding takes place in all weather conditions and with long downhill stretches involved and high speeds being reached, having a robust trail mtb is advisable. Wearing long-finger gloves and knee pads are recommended for protection should a fall occur.

TRAIL MOUNTAIN BIKE SPECIFICATIONS

While trail riding can be practiced on all mountain bikes, carbon or alloy full suspension bikes with forks of between 130mm and 170mm provide optimal comfort while our innovative TwinLoc Suspension System delivers total control. TwinLoc is operated by a handlebar remote and gives a choice of three ride modes, Descend, Traction Control and Lockout. With the challenging ground covered in trail riding, responsive brakes and wide handlebars along with strong wheels and tires are also essential for full control in all weather conditions.

ENDURO OR ALL-MOUNTAIN RIDING - ADRENALINE FUELLED ADVENTURE

Enduro really puts the adventure into mountain bike racing with extremely technical tracks which can include big drops and adrenaline fuelling jumps. Usually completed in staged races over a few days, Enduro competitions involve timed descents and steep climbs. Enduro started in the mountains of Europe and is now an extremely popular sport worldwide with modern competitions involving three to six timed trails. It is a good way to spend a day in beautiful natural scenery among like-minded cycling enthusiasts.

WHO TAKES PART IN ENDURO?

Although Enduro riders face the challenges of rugged mountain terrain along with drops and jumps, it is still an approachable sport for novice riders. Competitors race the clock rather than each other with everyone, no matter their experience, tackling the same course. Top Enduro riders combine the full skill set of physical fitness, mental stamina and bike handling skills within their performance. Wearing a full-face Enduro mtb helmet and some degree of padded body armour is highly advisable.

ENDURO MOUNTAIN BIKE SPECIFICATIONS

The best Enduro mtb is a tough and robust full-suspension one made of carbon or aluminium. It will have longer rear and front suspension travel than other types of mountain bikes with a front suspension travel generally between 150mm and 185mm. The suspension can be locked to assist with the steep climbs. Large brake rotors and a wide gear selection are helpful while tire conditions depend to an extent on the surface of the trail.
